Welcome to my new community. I hope this will become a place where hip hop fans from around the world can gather and engage in witty, scholarly discussion of hip hop lyrics. Please make yourself at home.

I think my favorite sequence of hip-hop lyrics is this, from KRS-One's "My Philosophy"

"Who gets weaker? The king or the teacher
It's not about a salary it's all about reality
Teachers teach and do the world good
kings just rule and most are never understood
If you were to rule or govern a certain industry
All inside this room right now would be in misery
No one would get along nor sing a song
'cause everyone'd be singing for the king, am I wrong?!"

My favorite recent one is Sage Francis, from "That Ain't Right"

"It's actually accepted
for rappers to have no ethics
your album would benefit if you gave half the effort
I attended candlelight vigils for Matthew Shepard
while you made another 'Fuck you, Faggot" record"

Everybody feel free to give theirs

Some say the blacker the berry, the sweeter the juice
I say the darker the flesh then the deeper the roots
I give a holler to my sisters on welfare
Tupac cares and don't nobody else care
I know they like to beat ya down a lot
When you come around the block brothas clown a lot
But please don't cry, dry your eyes, never let up
Forgive but don't forget keep your head up
And when he tells you you ain't nothin don't believe him
And if he can't learn to love you you should leave him
Cuz sista you don't need him
And I ain't tryin to gash up, I just call em how I see em
You know it makes me unhappy
When brothas make babies and leave a young mother to be a pappy
And since we all came from a woman
Got our name from a woman and our game from a woman
I wonder why we take from our women
Why we rape our women, do we hate our women?
I think it's time to kill for our women
Time to heal our women, be real to our women
And if we don't then we'll have a race of babies
That hate the ladies that make the babies
And since a man can't make one
So would the real men get up
I know your fed up ladies, but keep your head up

That's an amazing verse. When 2Pac wanted to dig in to the real world around him, he could be as great as people say he is.

ya tupac's amazing

Ayyo, I remember Marvin Gaye, used to sing ta me
He had me feelin like black was tha thing to be
And suddenly tha ghetto didn't seem so tough
And though we had it rough, we always had enough
I huffed and puffed about my curfew and broke the rules
Ran with the local crew, and had a smoke or two
And I realize momma really paid the price
She nearly gave her life, to raise me right
And all I had ta give her was my pipe dream
Of how I'd rock the mic, and make it to tha bright screen
I'm tryin to make a dollar out of fifteen cents
It's hard to be legit and still pay tha rent
And in the end it seems I'm headin for tha pen
I try and find my friends, but they're blowin in the wind
Last night my buddy lost his whole family
It's gonna take the man in me to conquer this insanity
It seems tha rain'll never let up
I try to keep my head up, and still keep from gettin wet up
You know it's funny when it rains it pours
They got money for wars, but can't feed the poor
Say there ain't no hope for the youth and the truth is
it ain't no hope for tha future
And then they wonder why we crazy
I blame my mother, for turning my brother into a crack baby
We ain't meant to survive, cause it's a setup
And even though you're fed up
Huh, ya got to keep your head up

flyingmidgetsss: hey can i join?

hey ppl i luv tupac also hes a lyrical genius and this is my fav poem by him

Today is filled with anger fueled with hidden hate scared of being outcast
afraid of common fate
Today is built on tragedies which no one wants 2 face nightmares 2 humanities
and morally disgraced
Tonight is filled with rage violence in the air children bred with ruthlessness
because no one at home cares
Tonight I lay my head down but the pressure never stops knawing at my sanity content when I am dropped
But 2morrow I c change a chance 2 build a new
Built on spirit intent of Heart and ideals based on truth and tomorrow I wake with second wind and strong because of pride 2 know I fought with all my heart 2 keep my dream alive--Tupac Shakur

tell me wat u think

wandervogel: Lauryn Hill

Hey thanks for the new community. I was wondering if you or anyone that stumbles upon this has the words to Interlude 5 on Lauryn Hill's unplugged album. I would like to use them for an empowerment training session for at-risk youth. I am starting the session in about a month and need them to hand out. If anyone has them, I would really appreciate them. Thanks... Peace.

Ya'll muthafuckas do it for the love of the rap
